Overview:
With the increasing popularity of dental implants and an estimated 25 million implants placed annually the number of patients with dental implants in general practice is ever increasing.
With this increase in implants comes an increase in peri-implant disease. It is estimated peri-mucositis and peri-implantitis may be as high as 50% of all implants today. The key to managing peri-implantitis lies in primary prevention of the disease and careful surveillance of implants.
This means dentists have a critical role in combating the tsunami of peri-implant disease. This course teaches general practitioners the latest understanding of aetiology and pathogenesis of peri-implant disease. It provides clear guidelines on implant maintenance requirements and protocols for non-surgical therapies at the earliest onset. In many cases implants will require surgical intervention of either implantoplasty, soft tissue grafting, hard tissue grafting or a combination approach. The course will help general practitioners direct their patients to timely surgical management where indicated or they may also consider providing the surgical care with prior periodontal plastic surgical experience.
