Mini Residency in Periodontics

This is an advanced theory and clinical training program for general dentists looking to expand their knowledge in periodontology and to provide periodontal treatment to their patients. It is designed so you can immediately implement periodontal procedures into your general practice safely and successfully. The education delivered is based on a complete review of the literature on Periodontology with a summation of over 500 articles and reviews. The course focuses on the latest evidence-based procedures with proven longterm outcomes.

The structure of the course is a combination of didactic, hands-on workshops and live surgeries of the procedures taught. The 6 workshops run over one year so you are supported in your clinical practice and have mentorship as you follow your patients through their periodontal treatment journey.

Workshop 1: Non-Surgical Management of Periodontal Disease

Complete review of periodontology 101 - biology, aetiology, and pathogenesis.
Explore and develop a deep understanding for the 2017 Periodontal Disease Classification.
Evidence based management of periodontal disease including assessment, treatment planning, modalities of therapy and periodontal maintenance in general practice.
Patient communication techniques in managing periodontal disease.
Understanding of exact equipment setup required for your practice and instrument maintenance.
Protocols for non-surgical management of chronic periodontitis.
Introduction to Minimally Invasive therapies and the MINST approach.
Understand the evaluation process to proceed from non-surgical periodontal management to surgical management.
Hands-on training with powered and hand instruments on periodontal models.
Instrument sharpening.
Live patient highlighting techniques for split mouth debridement, periodontal review, and supportive periodontal therapy.

Workshop 2: Surgical Management of Periodontal Disease and Crown Lengthening

Identify and understand the significance of periodontal bony defects.
Evidence based management of different periodontal bony defects and furcations.
Introduction to Minimally Invasive Surgical Therapies (MIST).
Management of complications associated with surgical periodontal management.
Workshops: Hands on surgical training using periodontal models.
Patient assessment for functional and cosmetic crown lengthening in general practice.
Apply Digital Smile Design concepts in cosmetic crown lengthening.
Understand the technique variations of gingivectomy versus apical repositioned flaps and the need for osseous recontouring.

Workshop 3: Regenerative Therapies in Periodontics

Explore the modern era of periodontal regenerative therapies

Workshop 4: The Complete Periodontal Plastic Surgical Course 1

Appreciate the importance of soft tissue quality and volume in all aspects of dentistry
Education in the classic mucogingival surgeries including frenectomy, apical repositioning flaps, lateral repositioning flaps and papillary flaps
Learn the skills required for site preparation, harvesting and securing a free gingival graft
Live patient surgery for free gingival graft
Hands on clinical training on periodontal models of mucogingival surgeries

Workshop 5: The Complete Periodontal Plastic Surgical Course 2

Complete clinical training in the management of single and multiple teeth recession defects
Microsurgical plastic training
Application of connective tissue grafts and soft tissue substitutes (Alloplasts and xenografts)
Coronal advancement flaps for singular and multi teeth defects will be extensively covered
Tunnel techniques (modified coronally advanced tunnel) for singular and multi teeth defects will be extensively covered

Hands on clinical training on animal models

Workshop 6: Management of Peri-implant Disease

The biology, aetiology and pathogenesis of peri-implant diseases
The latest evidence based approaches for implant maintenance and prevention of disease development
